Census records for the McGlauhon/McGlawn family

Not all of these records are for my line. These are to be used as a research tool. I also want to mention that many of the notes that are here within these census records are not my own but of those that actually sent the records to me by e-mail. Sarah Foster sent me many of the census records, but there were others as well that have contributed to this list.

1850 Census for Tallapoosa County, Alabama
Page 97 B Township 19

William McGlowen age 40 occupation: Farmer b. GA
Convict
Eliza McGlowen age 35 b. GA
Henry McGlowen age 14 b. AL
Elizabeth McGlowen age 9 b. AL attended school]

1850 Federal Census, Chambers County, AL, page 774:
Jeremiah McGlawn, 71 years old, farmer, born North Carolina
Matilda, age 31, born GA
George, age 11 months, born GA
Mary, age 10, born GA
Nancy, age 7, born GA (This is Nancy Jane Noble, James Jackson's 2nd
wife)

1850 Federal Census: Jeremiah McGlawn, page 774(?), Chambers
Co., AL, 71 years old, farmer, born North Carolina. Matilda, age
31, born GA; George, 11 months, born GA.; Mary, 10, born GA.;
Nancy, 7, born GA. [ Apparently Jeremiah's wife who was near his
age died sometime between 1840 and 1850. From a letter from Lorna
Hibbs, responding to a query I made on the McGlaughon List:
"There is one researcher who has said that the tale in his family
is that Jeremiah 'went up to Detroit county and brought back a
Blackfoot Indian woman and married her.' We have found a marriage
to a Matilda Forgerty, whom we assume could be this woman" Since
George was born in GA, the family had relocated to Alabama within
the last 11 months. The two girls, aged 10 and 7, are given the
last name McGlawn in this census, so they are probably the last
two children born to Jeremiah's first wife, both born after the
1840 census. She would have been at least 53 years old!
1850 Federal Census: Turner McGlown, page 097, Tallapoosa Co.,
AL, age 35, farmer, born GA. Lucinda, age 40, born GA. Children:
Lucy, 16; James, 14; Edward, 10; Washington, 8; Thomas, 6; and
Wesley, 1. All born in GA except Wesley born in AL. Also on same
page, William McGlown, 40, farmer, with Eliza, 35; Henry, 14; and
Elizabeth, 9. And Edward M. McGlown, 40, farmer, with Imonine
(?), 27; and Mary Ann, 8.
1850 Federal Census: John Wright, page ___, Troup Co., GA, age
37, gin maker, born New York City. Martha [McGlaun], 29; William,
12; George, 11; Turner, 8; Charles, 6; Daniel, 4; Linden, 1 month;
John Wright, Sr., 60, wheel wright, born New Hampshire.

GA 1860 Slave Schedule GA12026682

1860 Federal Census: Matilda McLorn, page 150, Tallapoosa Co.,
AL, age 38, with Sarah (Mary in 1850 census), age 19; Nancy, 17;
George, 11; Jeremiah, 9; Emeline, 6; and Permelia (?), 3. Thus we
surmise that Jeremiah McGlaun died between 1857 and Sept., 1860,
aged at least 78 years, and apparently vigorous to the end! In
spite of diligent searching, I have found no record of Turner
McGlawn in the 1860 census, nor can I locate Martha Wright.
===================
1870 - GA
===================
1870 Federal Census: [Martha] Susan Wright, page 243, Bluff
Springs, Clay Co., AL, 41, with George A., 16 (this can't be her
son George, wrong age); Willis, 15; John W., 13. In spite of the
different first name used, this is the same person. The younger
sons names are well documented. Adjacent to this household is C.
D. Wright, her son.
1870 Federal Census: Matilda McGlawn, page 94, Tallapoosa Co.,
AL, age 50, keeping house, born GA, cannot read or write, with
Jerry, 15; Emily, 15; Almida, 14. Only the son Jerry (Jeremiah)
can read and write, although it says that both girls attended
school within the year. [Note: some discrepancies in ages over
census years can probably be attributed to illiteracy.] Also:
George McGlon (son of Matilda and Jeremiah), page 108, Tallapoosa
Co., AL, age 22, with Jenny, age 18. George and Jenny are living
with Sarah Taylor, age 37, and 6 children, probably Jenny's
mother.

The 1810 Federal census for NC is on line. I have not seen the actual
census record but it is as follows:

Wm. McGlaughon

0 males to age 10
0 males 10-16
1 male 16-26
0 males 26-45
1 male 45+

0 females 0-10
0 females 10-16
1 female 16-26
0 females 26-45
1 female 45+

Jeremiah

2 males to age 10
0 males age 10-16
0 males age 16-26
1 male age 26-45
0 males age 45+

1 female to age 10
0 females 10-16
1 female 16-26
0 females 26-45
0 females 45+

Nancy Baker would be in th 16-26 age range in 1810. Since I doubt that
she married at the age of 11 (even back then), I would say she was
probably 21-25 years old in 1810. I used the age of 16 as the youngest
age she would have been at the time of the marriage in 1805. Adding 5
years would make her 21 in 1810. The oldest she would have been would
be 25.
