Here is Caroline's line as she has posted it on Genealogy.com

My great-great grandparents on my father's father's side of the family were Caroline Westlake and James Gardiner. I have just come into possession of a copy of the record of their marriage in 1843, in Somerton, County of Somerset, England.

I have not been able to read everything on this document (at this time I don't have a printed copy, but must read it on the computer screen), but they were married in the Church of Somerton. Caroline Westlake's father is listed as Adam Westlake, and James Gardiner's father is listed as William Gardiner.

I have seen several posts relating to several Adam Westlakes of Somerset County. I am trying to establish if any of these Adam Westlakes is the one who is the father of Caroline Westlake, and thus my ancestor.

Here is a follow-up of what I have learned about Caroline Westlake and James Gardiner, my great-great grandparents, who were married in Somerton, Somerset County, England, in 1843.

Using films from LDS, I searched the Census of 1841, and found Caroline Westlake living in the home of her parents, Adam Westlake and Harriet ?. They were listed as living on Kirkham Street. Also living in the census were older brother Charles Westlake and younger brother William. Harriet is shown as having been born in Bath, the others in Somerton.

I also found John Westlake living in Somerton with his wife Hester and their rather large family. I am positive that John Westlake is Adam's brother. Also living in John's home was Adam Westlake, age 85, who had to have been the father of John and Adam, and the son of the original William Westlake who was born in Somerset County in the 1700s.

Then I checked the Census of 1851 records, and found Adam Westlake and his wife Harriet again, still living on Kirkham Street, this time with no children, but with grandson Adam Westlake, age 3, and Edith Gardiner, age 5, present in the home. It would seem to me that this Edith Gardiner has to be the daughter of James and Caroline Westlake Gardiner, and thus establishing a definitive link between these two families.

In the Census of 1851, I also found John Westlake and some of his children; his wife Hester was missing, but I believe that she died about 1850. They were still living at Old Hill.

I am now in the process of going through Parish baptism, marriage and death records for Somerton.

Here are some baptism records I found:

May 11, 1817-Jane, daughter of Adam and Harriet Westlake.

May 20, 1820-Charles, son of Adam and Harriet Westlake.

October 10, 1824-Caroline, daugher of Adam and Harriet Westlake. Her birth date was also recorded: August 12, 1822.

October 10, 1824-William, son of Adam and Harriet Westlake. His BD was also recorded: July 20, 1820.

I also found the baptism dates for many, if not all, of John's and Hester's children. Here the names of the children I found: Elias, Caroline, Grace, George, Jane, and Mary Ann. I have both census records and parish records for them.

In the Marriage records, I found these records:

John Westlake and Hester Squire-February 10, 1823.

John Munday and Jane Westlake-October 3, 1835. Jane Munday was a witness at the marriage of James and Caroline Gardiner, and I believe this forms another link in a chain of circumstantial evidence for this family.

I am not through with these films, and will post further when I learn more.

Here are the names and numbers for the microfiche films I used:

Census Returns for Somerton-Somerset-England GB 1841 (#474603)

Census Returns for Somerton-Somerset-England GB 1851 (#221083)

Parish Registers 1697-1906 (#1526731)

I decided to post this information as a favor to others researching this family. I have received so much help that I wanted to return the favor.

Unfortunately, I have not had much luck with the Gardiner side of this marriage, but I'll keep searching.

E-mail me if you would like to ask about other things I found.

Happy Hunting!

Here is a follow-up on my Westlake family tree. My tree ties in with that of Sandra Hoard, who has so kindly posted her website above.

Her famiy tree starts with William Westlake, who married Mary ? about 1742 in Somerset County, England.

If you follow her tree, you see that the children of William and Mary Westlake were Amos Westlake, William Westlake, Hannah Westlake, Mary Westlake, and Adam Westlake, who was christened Sep 10, 1758 and who died on Nov 17, 1841.

Her family then descends from the next-oldest child, William, I believe (**no...I also descend from Adam!  --Sandy), and mine from the youngest child, Adam, whose baptism and death dates are given above. As she notes, Adam Westlake and Elizabeth Masters of Long Sutton were married the twenty-sixth of June, 1777, Somerton. (film # 1526731).

Adam and Elizabeth's marriage is #221 in the marriage section of the Parish Register.

I then have a number of children born to Adam and Elizabeth (Betty) Masters Westlake. My baptism list begins with Sarah, who was baptised in 1785. I do not have the first three baptisms, as I have not checked the Long Sutton film yet, but after Sarah, I have Elizabeth, Adam, Eve, George, and John.

This Adam, who was baptized October 31, 1790, was the father of Caroline Westlake, whom I first started trying to find. Adam married Harriet ?, who, according to the Census of 1851, was born in Bath. I am still trying to find a record of their marriage. (Census Record, Somerton, Somerset County, England, is film # 221083)

Adam and Harriet Westlake had four children that I can document. Jane Westlake was baptized on May 11, 1817, in the parish church of Somerton. It appears that she married John Munday (Mundy)on October 3, 1835, in the parish church in Somerton. His parents appear to be Edward and Sarah Munday. John Munday appears to have been baptized January 17, 1813, in the parish church of Somerton, and may be the John Munday whose burial is recorded in the Burial Records at age 39 in 1850. (film # 1526731)

The baptism records for younger children Charles, Caroline, and William appear in the previous post. The Parish Baptism Register even gave the birthdates for Caroline and William, as I have noted in that post.

I am still searching for many of the records for the above family. It would appear that some or all of them left the Church of England, and perhaps the area, at about this time (1851 or so). The next documented record I have is of the marriage of the son of Caroline Westlake Gardiner, William Westlake Gardiner, to Emma Smith, in Street, Somerset County, in the Congregation Chapel on May 11, 1876.

Within five years, William Westlake Gardiner and Emma Smith Gardiner would have three children, and would, in 1881, immigrate to America, living first in Moberly, MO, and then in Mount Vernon, IL, and finally, Champaign, IL, where he died.

I hope this research can be helpful to someone else. (All films were obtained through the LDS family research center in Birmingham, AL)

New information Caroline sent to me in e-mail on 3-3-2002

I have lots more information now!  I spent most of last Thursday at LDS, using the same film (#1526731).  I have two new films to look at once I finish with this one, if I ever do!

First, I will handle corrections and/or additions to my immediate line.  Then I'll put in the information I have about the line of John Westlake.

1) Harriet Westlake, wife of Adam Westlake, was buried 9/11/1871, at age 87, in Somerton, Somerset.  She would have been born about 1784 or so.

2) Adam and Harriet Westlake had a son older than the children listed.  His name was George Haggett Westlake, and he was christened 2/2/1816.  His may be the burial record that I have for a George Westlake, buried 10/16/1837 in Somerton at age 24.  He does not appear again in the records that I have.  He was probably born about two years before he was christened, about 1814, so that would make him about 24 in 1837.

3) It appears that the John Munday who died in 1850 was not Jane's husband, as they were still having children four years later.  Here are their children:

Charles Munday, s. of John and Jane, bap. 12/25/1835.

Caroline Munday, d. of John and Jane, bap. 10/25/1844.

Charlotte Munday, d. of John and Jane, bap. 7/8/1846.

Edith Elizabeth Munday, d. of John and Jane, bap. 5/15/1850.

John Munday, s. of John and Jane, bap. 6/20/1852.

Jane Alma Munday, d.  of John and Jane, bap. 12/10/1856.

Agnes Munday, d. of John and Jane, bap. 9/24/1858.

Frederick John, s. of John and Jane, bap. 6/28/1865.

4) I did not find a marriage record for Charles Westlake, but I did find a number of children born to Charles and Mary Ann/Mary/Maryann Westlake, who I assume are the brother and sister-in-law of Caroline Westlake:

Samuel Seymour, s. of Charles and Mary Ann, bap. 2/25/1846.

Frank Westlake, s. of Charles and ?, bap. 3/27/1849.

Lydia Mary Westlake, d. of Charles and, bap. 10/13/1850.

Jane Westlake, d. of Charles and Maryann, bap. 5/27/1855.

5)  William Westlake married Deborah Gillet, daughter of Edward Gillet, on 1/15/1848.

6)  Caroline Westlake and James Gardiner, married 1843 in Somerton, had the following children:

Charles Gardiner, s. of James and Caroline, bap. 3/2/1844.

Edith Gardiner, d. of James and Caroline, bap. 10/12/1845.

John Gardiner, s. of James and Caroline, bap. 8/2/1847.

George Adam Gardiner, s. of James and Caroline, bap. 9/11/1850.

William Westlake Gardiner, s. of James and Caroline, born 11/30/1852, bap. 1/2/1853.  (My great-grandfather)

Jane Gardiner, d. of James and Caroline, bap. 1/3/1855.

Henry Gardiner, s. of James and Caroline, bap. 4/24/1856.

Harriet Gardiner, d. of James and Caroline, bap. 12/14/1858.

Edwin Gardiner, s. of James and Caroline, bap. 6/7/1861.

Robert Gardiner, s. of James and Caroline, bap. 10/2/1863.

Emily Ann Gardiner, d. of James and Caroline, bap. 6/3/1868.

7)  William Westlake Gardiner, my great-grandfather, married Emma Smith, daughter of John Smith and ? Fox Smith, on May 11, 1876, in the Congregational Chapel in Street, Somerset County.

8)  William Westlake and Emma Smith Gardiner had the following children:

Ella Grace Gardiner (m. Charles Walters), born 3/24/1877 in Street. Died 11/8/1943, in Champaign, IL.

Elsie Maud Gardiner (m. George Yanos), born 1/5/1879 in Street.  Died after 1943.

William John Henry Gardiner (m. Nellie Ross), born 9/27/1880 in Street.

Arthur Gardiner (m. Mamie Francis Whitten), born 12/7/1882 in Moberly, MO.
Died May 3, 1973, in Birmingham, AL.  (my grandparents)

John J. Gardiner, born June 1885 in Moberly, MO.

Lula Evelyn Gardiner (m. E.J. Greene), born March 1888 in Moberly, MO.

Charles Roy Gardiner, born February 1893, in Mt. Vernon, IL.

9) The children of John and Hester Westlake had the following dates of baptism:

Elizabeth, bap 11/6/1825.

Mary Ann, bap. 11/6/1825.

Elias, bap. 12/31/1826.

Caroline, bap. 1/27/1830.  Caroline married John Cox on 9/4/1865.

Grace, bap. 2/16/1834.  Grace apparently had four illegitimate children: George Henry Westlake (bap. 10/6/1852), Mary Jane Westlake (9/7/1869), John Westlake (3/28/1869), and Hester Westlake (3/28/1869)  George Henry became a solicitor's clerk, and married Eliza Burford.  Mary Jane married James Mills on 6/19/1875. She was 18 when she married, so was apparently was born about 1857.  For some reason, these children were not baptized until they were about 8-10 years of age.

Best,

Caroline

Jane, bap. 1/25/1833.
