Comments:Thanks for the info, I just called my dad and asked him for some names so I can finally get a family tree. I know my grandfathers name was George Westlake and I think his father was Clarence. I surely hope I find pictures to show and share with my family.

Your sight is wonderful thank you for your time.

sincerely

Hello Jason,

At this time, I do not have your Westlake line connected up to mine, but I admire that you are taking the time to try to collect some information on your line. If you happen to be able to connect it up to mine, please do let me know. Take the time to collect more than just names. Get the pictures, documents, stories, all that you can and it puts LIFE into your history.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Comments:Hi Sandy
I'm still trying to search for any information regarding my John Westlake (as per my last message in your guest book). As he was born around 1756, his dad must have been around the 1720s. Was just wondering if you have any brothers for your George Westlake born 1721. My John's dad was Richard Westlake, but unfortunately I have no idea as to where he was born. Would presume somewhere near Somerton, as John was born in Martock, Somerset.
Any information would be more than gratefully received.
Thank you
Best wishes
Tracey
PS: Hope this message makes sense!!

Hi Tracey,
Nice to hear from you again. I think that you are refering to the oldest in my tree as William that was born about 1721, not George. At this point in time, no I do not have any siblings for this William. This research was provided by another relative, so I do not have the actual documentation for it, but here's the info on the LDS site:

Comments:Hi,

Elizabeth Westlake, (1880) daughter of George Westlake (1853) and Eliza Burford (1850) married Ernest Norris from Somerton, Somerset, They gave birth to Laurel May Norris,(1900,) who had an illegitimate child, Evan Arthur Norris,(1921) who is my father. Ernest Norris was killed in 1904 in a mining accident in South Wales. Elizabeth remarried Herbert Dummet in Somerton in 1906. When my father was born they went initially to the local work house, but Herbert insisted that no member of his family was staying in a work house, so my father went to live with Herbert, in South Wales. My father left home at 13 and worked in Brighton hotels where he served people like Noel Coward and Ivor Novello. Jan 1939 he joined the Royal Air Force and went with the BEF to France and served with 13 Squadron, as an air gunner on Lysanders. After the Germany Army swept through Northern France in May 1940, he made his way to St Nazaire and was sent out to a ship for evacuation, HMT Lancastria. The Luftwaffe put a bomb in the forward hold and one down the funnel. There could have been up to 9,000 on board including women and children, About 2,200 survived, making this the greatest known British maritime disaster of a British ship.
He went on to serve with the Eighth Army in the Western Desert picking up mines. He is now suffering from dementia.

I hope this is of interest.

Regards
David

Comments:Hope you dont mind me putting a help message on your site. I have traced my Westlake line back to around the 1740s, but would like to find the brothers and sisters of my gggg grandfather. His name - JOHN WESTLAKE born around 1756 in Martock in Somerset. He married a HESTER ATKINS in 1781. As far as I can see, Hester was born either in Trowbridge, Wiltshire or Norton St Philip, Somerset.
John died in 1815 and was buried in Norton St Philip, Somerset.
If there is anyone out there that knows any info on Johns brothers and sisters, then please email me.
Please note I have all other information about their children, it is Johns brothers and sisters I would like info on.
Thank you
Best wishes to you all.

As yet, I have found no connection to your line of Westlakes, but like so many others researching the Westlake tree, I believe there must be a connection somewhere.

Hello Tracey,
Happy that you have placed your plea here. Good Luck with your research! Maybe one day we can hook up the two lines.

Comments:hello to the westlake family. i really liked all the photos that you have here. they are great. i am just researching my family and my great grandmother was a westlake before she married. Her name was Winifred westlake. Her father's name was Albert Westlake. My nanna and great aunty Dawn are the only info i have at the moment. But my great aunty dawn remembers that great nanna winifred was supposedly one of 13 kids (or so). some of their names are Rose, Albert, Posey, William, Stanley. My great nanna was the youngest. I am not saying that we are related somehow, but it sure would be convenient! There are a couple of photos that do remind me of my great nanna and great aunty dawn, but maybe that is just coincidence. thankyou for reading and keep up the great work!

Comments:I found your posting for John Smith WESTLAKE & family at Ancestry.com Ancestry World Tree Project last night. I decided to check out your web site - Very nice Job!! However, I can't seem to find any reference to this family on the site. I presumed that it was your direct line and wanted to share some information with you.

John Smith WESTLAKE, of Perry, Wyoming, NY is the husband of one of indirect ancestors, Louisa HANCOCK. I have been searching for Louise for many years. When her father, Thomas, died in 1848 in Winscombe, Somerset, he left a will in which he named Louisa "in America."

America is a big place! With the tremendous growth of material on the Internet I was delighted to find her! Her father actually disowned her if she did not return to live in the UK! Either he was very angry over her leaving or did not approve of the marriage.

If this family is tied to your direct line I have some information that you may be interested in. For your general information John S. was a merchant tailor. Louisa immigrated in 1837, coming from Bristol to NY with a one year old child named Albert (probably the one you believe died in LeRoy. Where is LeRoy?). There were three other WESTLAKE's on the same vessel, some of which may be of interest to you:
Arrival Date: May 15, 1837, Port of Arrival: New York; Port of Departure: Bristol, Destination: United States of America; Ship Cosmo
Louisa WESTLAKE: age 25; female
Albert WESTLAKE: age 1, male
Ann WESTLAKE: age 27, female
George WESTLAKE: age 26, male
Jane WESTLAKE: age 22, female

From census records I can add one more child to the family group you listed at Ancestry World Tree:
ABIGAIL, bc1839, NY

I have no knowledge of the first child that died as an infant. John & Louisa were married in 1833 so the child must have been born & died in Somerset.

I would appreciate knowing if you can shed any further light on Pricilla m. FISK & Lucy W. M. DYENES.

If you are interested in the ancestry of Louisa I can provide you with that information.

I look forward to hearing from you as time permits.

Hello Mary,

Thank you for signing my guestbook and the kind words. No this is not my direct line, but it is tied into my Westlake line so I include it in my genealogy on WorldConnect at Rootsweb which is the same tree that you found on Ancestry.com.

Thank you for posting your information here in the guestbook. It will hopefully help some others researching your same line and they may get in contact with you.

This page on my website is of the descendents of George Smith Westlake, brother to your John Smith Westlake:

https://sjhoard.tripod.com/westlakefamilytree/id16.html

Researching this line:
Debby Pietryk
dpietryk@tcdi.net

I believe that my information on the John Smith Westlake line came from Nigel Blake. Unfortunately, I do not have his current email address. Did you happen to read through all of the guestbook entries to see if he may have signed it? I wish that there was an easy way to search through this information, but the only way to do it is page by page.

I'm sorry, but I do not have anything further on Louisa Hancock or her family ancestry line. My research is pretty much dedicated to just Westlake's and their descendents on this website. I do not know where Leroy is at that the Dr. Albert S. Westlake died. This is the information that was provided to me and it was not made clear where Leroy was at unfortunately. I do not seem to be able to locate a George Westlake (that you mention was aboard a ship with your Westlake's) born about 1811 in my family tree.

I have nothing further than what you have included on Pricilla or Lucy, children of John Smith Westlake.

I will include your message in my notes for Louisa so that if someone should contact me asking for further information on her, I can refer them to you by email address. I really have no need for Lousia's ancestry as she is not a Westlake descendant, but I do thank you for the offer.

I'm not sure if I have been of much help to you, but I do wish you luck in your research.

Happy Hunting!

Comments:Hi
I am helping a Westlake friend with her family tree and wondered if you had any connections to the Westlake's in Australia. The earliest one she has is Thomas Westlake born 1820 married Mary Ann Young.

Hello Frances,

Thank you for signing my Westlake family guestbook. I did see that there was one Mary Westlake (1829-1860) that died in Australia, but I see no male Westlake's that appear to have went there. This Mary was daughter of George (1793-1878) and Mary [COX] WESTLAKE. I see also that some of the COX line died in Australia. Emma COX (1855-1926) that married Frederick KERSLAKE.

Perhaps if you contact the person that posted the tree on the following website, they might be able to help you further.

http://www.geocities.com/bbutterflyvee/charts2/charts2.htm#eacox

It appears that there are others looking for Westlake's in Australia that have signed my guestbook. Perhaps if you go through the guestbook entries you could contact those that have Australian interests in this name. Possibly they could be of help in your research.

I've attempted to send you an email, but the one that you list bounced back to me as not delivered.

I can't find any information on her, as noone in my family has any details of her and i can't find her on the births, deaths and marriage registry. admittedly, this is my 1st day of research, so i will no doubt find some more info on them. it just struck me that Posey has almost twin-like features as my family. very interesting. apparently Winifred was one of 14 children. she was born in 1914 and married a man with the last name DUNDAS. my grandmother does not know his whole name and just tells me that he was killed in WW1. i would appreciate any help. thanks

Hello Chelsea,
Since you left no email address, I will answer here only. Posey Westlake was born in USA. As far back as I am aware, all of her ancesters were from England. To my knowledge, none of her ancesters within a few removals have gone to Australia.
Thank you for sharing and good luck with your research!

Comments:Is there anyone out there that could help me. Am trying to trace parents for Arthur (Author) Westlake born abt 1848, Norton St Philip, Somerset, England, but have searched all census sheets as far as humanly possible, but to no avail. The only other information about him is that he married a lady called Anne Maria b: abt 1849. They had 5 children, Margaret 1878; Arthur 1882; William Henry 1871; Emma 1887; and Rebecca 1871 (born either in Trowbridge, Wiltshire or Norton St Philip, Somerset).

I do know that Westlakes were in Devon long before the Norman invasion and if possible would like to trace that far back.

Thank you.

Comments:So excited to have found your website. My father and I are just starting out trying to trace our Westlake family tree. My great grandparents were William Henry Westlake and Selina Westlake. Selina apparently died in 1948 around the Autumn time. William had a brother that worked in Trowbridge at some time as a coal merchant, but as yet we don't know his name. My dad seems to think they came from the Somerset area but exactly where, not sure.
William and Selina had around 13 children, some of the names are
Harry
George
Frank
Eddie (could be Edwin)
Archie (could be Archibald)
to name but a few.

Well done on such an excellent website.

Hello Tracey,

Thank you for the kind words and for signing my Westlake family guestbook. I'm excited that you found me as well!

Do you know the birthdates of William Henry or Selina Westlake? Even approximate dates would help a lot. I could try to see what I can find in some census records if I had a little more info to go on.

1891 Census: I found a Selina Westlake born about 1872 married to a Thomas Westlake

1891 Census: I found a Selina Westlake born about 1867 married to a Fredrick Westlake

I cannot see anything yet with a Selina married to a William or Henry Westlake. Hopefully further information on dates might help with the search.

Hello Val,

Thanks for signing my Westlake guestbook. Do you have any idea of the siblings of your William of Barton, Somerset, England? I have Charles and Mary Ann Seymour Westlake of that area with a son William born 1852 in Barton. They had several children: Fredrick, Samuel, Frank, Lydia Mary, William, Jane and Harriett. By chance did any of these names filter down through the family?

Happy Hunting,

Hello again Trevor,

I can only verify that George Henry Westlake born Sep 1852 was the grandson of John Westlake born abt 1798 through census records. I cannot find who his parents were. Maybe someone else reading this can help you further.

Comments:Surfing Decendancy of ADAM WESTLAKE Third generation came across a John Westlake married Hester Squire February 10, 1823. John could be my g/g/grandfather. Daughter Grace had Son George who married Eliza Burford on 08/02/1875. They had children- Alice Mary-Ann, Elizabeth, Frederick and my Father Arthur, and possibly Reginald.

Hello Trevor,

Nice to hear from you. This line that you speak of is confusing to say the least and I'm not certain at all that I have is accurate. I received the line from someone else. When you made the post to my guestbook, I decided to look into it a bit with census records. I'm not clear at all even after looking at those just what has happened in this family. Here's some of what I sorted out, but not sure how much help it really is yet.

John Westlake born abt 1798 (wife Hester Squire) had daughter Grace Westlake born abt 1834.

Through census records it states that Grace Westlake has the following children, but father is unknown:

Samuel Westlake born abt 1858
John Westlake born abt 1867
Thomas Westlake born abt 1869
Esther Westlake born abt 1865

On the 1861 British Census, George Westlake appears to be living with John Cox as head age 29; George Westlake as boarder age 8 and Caroline Westlake (dau of John b abt 1798) as servant age 28. Now if anything, this makes me think that George is somehow connected to Caroline rather than Grace.

G.H. Westlake (b abt 1853) is shown to be listed as a grandson of John Westlake (b abt 1798) on the British 1871 census. I assume that this is George Henry Westlake. I cannot verify who George Henry Westlake's parents are. By 1881 on the British Census, George H. Westlake is married to wife Eliza and has 2 children of his own listed: Alice M. age 5, Elizabeth 10 mo. Also listed is John Westlake as his grandfather age 83.

Here are a couple of records that I found that I think are George Henry Westlake, but it gives only the info I provide here. I assume that you would need to order these documents somehow to find out more information, but I am not certain:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Index: 1837-1983 Record
about George Henry Westlake
Name: Westlake, George Henry
Record Type: Births
Quarter: September
Year: 1852
District: Langport
County: Somerset
Volume: 5c
Page: 436 (click to see others on page)

England & Wales, FreeBMD Index: 1837-1983 Record
about George Henry Westlake
Name: Westlake, George Henry
Record Type: Deaths
Age at death: 45
Quarter: March
Year: 1899
District: Langport
County: Somerset
Volume: 5c
Page: 265 (click to see others on page)

When you click to see others on page, it really gives no further information that helps in any way.

The best that I can do at this point is verify that George Henry Westlake's grandfather was John Westlake........husband of Hester Squire. I cannot verify who his parents were at this time.

As for Grace, this is another confusing area. I find nowhere that it lists George Henry as son of Grace. So that is why I feel that the info provided to me is not correct.

One possibility for the children of Grace that are mentioned is that Grace was never married and had several children that took on her name. Another is that Grace married a man with the same last name as hers.......Westlake and died before showing up in any census records that I can get at. Another possibility is that Grace raised as her own, children of a sibling that died. The children are listed as son/dau on the census records though, not niece/nephew so I don't think that this is the case.

I hope that this in some way makes sense to you. I can send you the census images if you would like to give it a shot to sort some of this out.

Now ......I find a marriage date for George and Eliza Burford as Mar 1875 Langport, Somerton, Somerset Co., England, or perhaps this was the intent to marry and the actual marriage was Aug 2 1875. Burford is not Eliza's maiden name, but her 1st husband's name. This is proven by a child named Anna Maria Burford living with George and Eliza in a census record and listed as step dau. From what I can figure out, here are the children of George Henry Westlake:

Alice Mary Ann Westlake b. abt 1876, Somerton, Somerset Co., England
Elizabeth Westlake b abt 1880, Somerton, Somerset Co., England
Fredrick Westlake b. abt 1884, Somerton, Somerset Co., England
Arthur Westlake b. abt 1886, Somerton, Somerset Co., England
Reginald Westlake b. abt 1893, Somerton, Somerset Co., England

I cannot be sure if Eliza is the mother of these children.

Happy Hunting!

This is really a puzzle!!!

Comments: Hi all WESTLAKES
Just following this link sent to me by my brother Paul who has also signed the guest book.

I have traced my family back to the early 1800's in Tavistock area of Devon but am having some problems. the earliest record is for Goerge Westlake b1812 Coryton Devon shown on the 1861 census as living at Townly, Stowford Village (Townly has been mis transcribed on some modern sources to Townby and is also shown as Townley on an old map of 1891 and Townleigh Farm on modern maps of the area)

I don't know if the link above to MSN my space will work but give it a try if you want to see some modern family photo's.

Hello Russell,

Thank you for signing my Westlake guestbook. Nice to hear from you. As I related to your brother, I have not been able to establish a link between the Devon Westlake's and the Long Sutton/Compton Dundon, Somerset area Westlake's as of yet. If you should discover a link, I'd enjoy hearing about it. My line of Westlake's begins in 1701 with the birth of William Westlake, he died in 1787 and was buried in Somerset, England.

Comments: Hi, Great site,
My father was born in Plymouth south Devon, and we lived in Torquay, South Deven for many year, durring my childhood. durring that time a gentleman came to visit us, he was researching the Westlake Family tree, we gave him details of our family as best as we could. sometime later he wrote back to us informing us that the Westlakes originaly came to England with the Normans, they settled near a small lake, somewhere around Oakhamton Devon, they were known as the people who live on the west of the lake, later known as westlake. apparently the baron of the local castle came and took the daughter of the westlakes as his bride. i hope you find this of interest.

Hello Paul,

Thank you for signing my guestbook. I have heard this story that you wrote before and thank you for posting it onto my site. The Westlake line that I am from is from the Somerset, England area. I have not been able to make a connection to the Devon Westlake's as of yet. Would you happen to know if there is a connection between the two branches? Maybe one of the Westlake son's left from Devon and traveled to Somerset beginning a Westlake branch there. My earliest Westlake is: William Westlake, born about 1721, buried Mar 16 1787 in Compton Dundon, Somerset, England. This William was married to Mary (last name unknown). She was born about 1721 and was buried Aug 31 1801 in Compton Dundon, Somerset, England. I really would enjoy viewing your Westlake line if you have it available. I could not get the homepage that you posted to my guestbook to work. Is there possibly a mistake in the typing? I also cannot contact you by email. It seems that it is not working.

Comments: hi,
I have enjoyed reading about the Westlake family of Somerton on your site, a lot of those names are very familiar to me as my Edwards family was in Somerton during the 18th and 19th centuries. I feel sure I came across the Westlake name in my research somewhere - perhaps as a witness to an Edwards marriage? Maybe the 2 families were friends? Could one of your Westlakes be connected to the Palmer's of Long Sutton at all? AND is there any chance your Gardiner was related to the Gardiner's of Ilchester, after all it is only 5 miles up the road.
I found your site thanks to a link on Roger Clarke's site about his (and mine!!) Pike and Gillett families.

Comments: I am a Hood family researcher and I am trying to determine the parentage of Electa Hood.
110 M iv. George H. WESTLAKE was born 1880 in Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. He died 1920 in Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY.
George married Electa C. HOOD 1905 in Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. Electa was born in 1887.

After George died, Electa apparently married another George Atkins, also of Auburn NY who was a grocery store manager in Auburn. They lived at 8 E. Parkway. I have a photo of Electa (who apparently was a.k.a. "Letty" and am just now piecing things together.

She is not an important link but as you know, as researchers when we find photos that really makes us even more curious. "Who are these people?" we say since it's more often the case where we have names and no photos.

She apparently was known to other Hood relatives in my line and so I am just trying to make the connection.

Thanks for any help you can be. Perhaps somewhere there is a mention of who her mother and father were in your records.

Hello Jeffrey,
Thank you for signing my guestbook. I had nothing further on your Hood family, but after looking at a few census records, I believe that I have found Lettie and her mother in the 1900 census. Maybe this will be of some help? As you probably know, there is no 1890 census, so the next that might be found would be the 1880 census where Lettie's mother, Jane would be 27. I'll see if I can find anything there and send to you in my next email.

If you have anything further on this Westlake line to share, I'd like to add the information into my tree. I will place your email address as a reference for this George Westlake in my tree.
Happy Hunting,

Comments: Hello,

I was a Westlake before I married. My Father is Mervyn Westlake, his Father was Percival Westlake. They came from Martock, and my Father says that his distant relatives came from Long Sutton. I guess that for many many centuries & generations, my side of the family really haven't moved very far from our ancestral home!

Comments: What a wonderful job you have done here. I am related to william Westlake who died in Devon in 1847. His widow, Jane Glanville, emigrated to Canada with her children & farmed the Nobleton/Schomberg area. Most of my family is still in the area. I have visited North Brentor in Devon a few times...a magical place.
I am making an album for my family as my father, Frederick Arthur Westlake died almost a year ago. Any information I can get on William's ancestors would be appreciated.

Hello Lynne,

Thank you for signing my Westlake Family guestbook and the kind words. Have you located your William in my family tree on World Connect?

I do not seem to be able to locate him in my research. Possibly I am missing something? If your William is not listed on my tree on World Connect, I have not connected him up to my tree and I would thus be unable to provide you with further information. Please let me know how you connect to my tree if you do.

Comments: Hi i wonder if you can help!! I have been researching the family name geen found a connection and your website was a related link to Roger Clarke.( so i had a little look ) My query is i have dated back on the geen family and come across a MARY WOOD b. abt 1848 m. william wood I dont know her maiden name.Maybe thats the same mary ?? The connections i am making are going back to somerset and devon. The reason i am emailling is I noticed you have the surname CURRAN listed I cant seem to find the connection. Reason being that was my maiden name ,however the mary wood part relates back on the geen side rather than the curran side even though they
too originate to somerset and devon too. I hope i have explained that correctly. I know in this line of enq. coincidenses occur but this one is baffling me ?? Hope you dont mind me asking
thanks for your time

Hello.......

Thanks for signing my Westlake guestbook. I do not have a John Burroughs Westlake on my tree. I do have John Westlake's. Can you tell me where he was born? Do you have any dates? My direct Westlakes were mostly located in Somerset, England prior to 1848 and then after that, Southfield, Oakland Co., MI. I do have a vast collection of Westlakes throughout the United States in my database though.

Comments: Sandra, just correcting the e-mail address on the site. I continue to work on Westlakes, and just today came across in my notes:

John Smith Westlake, son of Adam and Elizabeth Westlake, baptized February 17, 1811. That was either in Walton or in Somerton. I am not sure which, which shows what happens when my notes get very cold. I have never noticed his name before, and haven't seen it anywhere else. Perhaps he died as a child. It is so hard to connect burials information definitively to anyone.

Comments: Hi Sandra,

What a wonderful site and what a great job you have done. Let me introduce myself I am a 4 x greatgranddaughter of number 16 of your Westlake Family Tree Ann Dunster who Married John Newis Shepton Beauchamp. They had a daughter baptised Anna Newis 1823. Anna had a son Luke Newis 1842 who married Betsey Mead (from Barrington) in Shepton Beauchamp. They had a son called William 1877 who married Kate Rowswell (from Barrington) in Shepton Beauchamp. William and Kate had a son called Courtney Newis who was my darling granddad. Courtney married Nellie Cornelius and had my Mum all in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, England. My Mum and Dad emigrated to Australia in the 1970's. That is my story except to say I married a fourth generation Australian and have three lovely children Courtney Rose, Catherine Mary-Ellen and Daniel Joseph.
Wonder if you have received many emails from the Newis connection. I haven't come across many Newis researchers but would like to.
Cheers

Comments: HI: I found your web page several months ago. I knew that my WESTLAKE branch originated in Somerset and today have received documentation that I am indeed connected with your tree. I am descended from Adam and Harriet Westlake of Somerton. Adam was born about 1791. I am descended from their third child CHARLES, christened May 28, 1820. Charles had a son Frederick Charles William WESTLAKE who died tragically in 1886, leaving his children orphans. This was a storey that was passed down the family and I have documented that this is true. Three of Charles four children immigrated to Canada. I am still in touch with the England branch of this family.

My mother's maiden surname was Westlake. I do have some photos that thankfully were identified.

Look forward to hearing from you.

I beleive his parents to be Joseph westlake(b. 1848) and elizabeth holland both from long sutton somerset. it is possible that Joseph's parents could be joseph westlake b1823 long sutton somerset and margaret coat page. this is only guess work but he could be the joseph westlake that you have on ancestry.com as being born to george and Mary cox in 1823 in the same area.

Hello Helen,

Thank you so much for signing my Westlake guestbook and posting your information. Hopefully someone that is researching your direct line will contact you and be able to offer you some more assistance.

You surely must tie into our line seeing as your family were in the same area as my Westlakes were. You have an advantage over me by being there in England already. I'm in Michigan, USA!

Good luck with your hunt and please let us know if you find anything further out! I'd be happy to link you up to my Westlake tree.

Happy Hunting.......

After further info from Helen, I have sent her this message.....

Hello Helen,

This is great news that you have seemed to link into my Westlake tree at the point of George and Mary [Cox] Westlake's son, Joseph. Now I had that Joseph married Margaret Pope. I see that you have her name as Mary Coat Page. This is a bit confusing. Somewhere someone gave me as the marriage date of Joseph and Margaret Pope Westlake as 1848 in Long Sutton, Somerset, England. Looks like I probably found it on the Mormon site at www.familysearch.org but not completely sure. I would have to go there to look and see again.

If you should happen to have something typed up in the form of a family tree with dates and places, send it along to me and I'll add it into my personal family tree program so that maybe I can send them to you and/or they can find more on their line. The next time I update the family tree on my site, the new information would appear there.

Looks like you are making progress and this is GOOD!

My father's name was John Charles Westlake and he was born in Adrian (Nobles County) Minnesota in 1886. He had a sister named Annie and a brother named Orville. They separated shortly before their third child was born and I think he returned to England. My father John, married my mother, Ruby Magdalene Wright, in 1930; she was 25 years his junior. They had 10 children together and I am the second to the youngest. He died in 1955. If anyone can help me find a link of some kind, I would sure like to hear from them. Thanks.

Hello Phyllis,

Thanks so much for signing my Westlake family guestbook. I'm sorry to say that I do not have much help for you as of now. I cannot find anyone that looks to match up to your Westlake line. There's a couple of different lines of the Westlake family and we have not linked together yet. My line is mostly from the area surrounding Sommerset, England. Most of my line is still in the SE Michigan area.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

Comments: Mary Lou Salomon told me of your web site. You have done a wonderful job. My husband is related to Emma Sears on the Dewees side, married to Burr Westlake. I hope you enjoyed the pictures that Mary Lou sent. I was having trouble linking those pictures to the Dewees side of the family. I have so many pictures with no names,so no idea who they are. As luck would have it these had names.

Hello Barb,

Nice to hear from you! Yes, I did enjoy the pictures very much. I've been very busy lately, but I do have the pictures saved in my e-mail to remind me to add them to the website as soon as I can. I understand your delima with the pictures of unknown people. It is very frustrating isn't it? I have several myself that I am still trying to identify.
Happy Hunting...

Comments: Have some pictures of a Burr Sears Westlake and know nothing about him or when they were taken. I note you have a Burr Westlake whose mother's maiden name was Sears and am wondering if you have any additional info on him. These pictures were with a group of old family pictures from New Orleans, LA. I also found a Burr Westlake on the 1900 Census as a Mine Manager in Colorado. Does any of this sound familiar? Any leads would be helpful.
Mary Lou

Hello Mary Lou,

My great granfather is Melvin Albert Westlake. b: 1 May 1912 d: 1987. His father is Albert Westlake B:2 Jan 1890 d: 30 Sep 1960 His father is Wellington Westlake born abt 1859 and from there i am stuck. I do know that we are all from the area of chico, french gulch and redding areas in california. I would appreciate any help you could give me.
Thanks
Janey Westlake

Hello Janey,
Thanks for signing my guestbook. I'm sorry but I am not familar with your CA Westlake line. I did find one reference to a Westlake line that is possibly in CA. You might try contacting Virginia Kysh....

By looking at the dates you have listed, you should be able to locate them in census records. Try the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census in your area. Also you might try the marriage records that will often give the names of the parents. If you have found them in the census, look at pages that are near to your line. You might find their parents there or possibly other relatives. The census often gives the state of birth as well that is a good research help.
Good luck to you!

Comments: We have William James Westlake born 1850ish in London married Alice Baker born 1859abt in Hanwell. WE know they were living in QLD in 1888 as their furniture warehouse is listed but it is not registered in the 1876 directory so we can assume that they were still in England in 1876.Any leads on Westlake parents?

Hello Janelle,
Thank you for signing my guestbook. As far as I know, none of my Westlake line went to Australia. I know that there are branches that did, but not that are connected to my line as of yet to my knowledge. I'm not sure what QLD is that you are refering to. Please check back again to see if we have found any Australian links!

Comments: Hi, I found your website by accident and found it most interesting. My surname is Westlake, I was born and raised in Long Sutton Somerset and educated at Huish Episcopi. Small world.

I don't know if we are related, but my dad's name was William Albert and died in 1967 in Somerset. He had a brother called John and there was another Albert in the family, not sure if that was my grandad or great uncle. Most of my family still live in Somerset, around Curry Rival and Somerton. My mother's name was Eva Lily Martin who also died in 1966. My brothers are Ronald Albert and Alec Edward. My sisters are Jean and Eileen Ruth. Feel free to contact me if these ring a bell, and I'll investigate further on my side of the pond.

Hello Roger,

How nice to hear from you! I'm so glad that you happened upon my Westlake Family site. It's amazing that you are actually from the very place that my ancestor's immigrated from to America. George W. Westlake is my line. You can find information on him on the Westlake web site. Here are some very good possibilities of the line that you might follow. These are brothers of George W. Westlake that I have dead ends on.....

Joseph Westlake, chr. 1/25/1823, married Margaret Pope
Thomas Westlake, chr. 1/27/1834, married Ann Pope
William Westlake, chr. 6/5/1836, married Ann
John Westlake, chr. 7/23/1839

This above information may not be exactly correct. I'm getting it off of the Mormon family search site. Maybe at least it will be a good research start for you.

The above is all that I know about these men other than that they were brothers of my George W. Westlake and they were the sons of George and Mary (Cox) Westlake.

There is more information on the Mormon Family search site that looks interesting also...

William Westlake, b. abt 1864, of Longsutton, Somerset, England, no parents listed married to Alice Bryant or Alice Mary Bryant, Oct 29,1895 Longsutton, Somerset, England. The name William and John seem to possibly fit into your line.

These are lines that I'm fairly sure were in Long Sutton. There are other lines in other areas of Somerset that you might also want to follow up that are listed in the Westlake Family Tree on my site. If you could possibly get back to your grandparents, maybe we could hook you up to the tree!

Would you like for me to start a page up on my Westlake page for your line? I can post what information that you do know and pictures if you would like. Then we could see what happens. It seems likely that you are tied into our line.

Hope to hear more from you soon. Please carefully look over my site and visit all of the pages. There possibly might be some hints as to where to look there in Somerset. You are so lucky to be so near to all of your family history! I am eager to hear what you find. If there is anything further that I might be able to help you with, please let me know.

Kind Regards

Hello Dick,
Our line of the Westlake family originates in Somerset, England and then my branch goes onto Redford, MI, USA. I believe that there is another branch of Westlakes that are from Devonshire, England, but I am not familiar enough with that line to give you much help. Maybe a seach in the forum messages would help you out more.
Thanks for signing my guest book and happy hunting! --Sandy
