PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE PROCEDING:

There are at least two unrelated Hoard families in America.  I call the Hoard family that came into Mass in the mid 1600's the Northern line and the Hoard family that came into Virginia in the mid 1700's as the Southern line.  Does your Hoard family descend from the Northern Hoard's or the Southern Hoard's?  See the explaination at the bottom portion of this page.  Hopefully this will help you to get a start on the right track. This webpage is dedicated to the Northern Hoard line.  I have no further information on the Southern Hoard line other than what is posted at the bottom of this page.  The two lines are not directly related to one another.  One line began in England as Hore (Northern Hoard's) and the other began in England as Hord (Southern Hoard's).  It just happens that the names both evolved over the years into the surname of Hoard.

Shown above are three variations of the Hore coat of arms.

A question has come up from the guestbook as to the meaning of the phrase and words below the coat of arms for Hore shown above.  Here is what I came up with:

To give our love
To hope - To endure - To live

I'd like to hear opinions from others of just what the translation from Latin to English might be of:

datur hora amori
spero - dum - spiro

See the following page, linked below, of my site for some history on the Hore family and about the coat of arms.

Thanks to Robert Kemp, we now have a nice clean copy of one of the HORE family coat of arms and a copy of the HORE wax seal to display on this website.  Robert states that on the back of the wax seal is the following: Hore of Devon seal dated 1517 Original stamp in custody of Sir Timothy Hoare, Bank of Hoare, City of London.  Does anyone have a nice clean copy of the Hore family coat of arms shown at the far left from the three above that they will share?  I'd like to post it also at the top of this site.  I have somehow misplaced a copy of this particular one.  If anyone has a copy, please contact me by signing my guestbook.  Thanks!

You can use the search box below to search these pages here at Tripod.com.  As of April 2008, this search box did not seem to be working anymore.  You can try it if you'd like, but I cannot assure you of any results.  This search box will not search the Hoard Family tree on WorldConnect.  You must go to the following site to search that tree.

NORTHERN & SOUTHERN HOARD surnames

One very important piece of information is that there were two unrelated (as far as I am aware) families that carried the surname of Hoard in America.  I refer to them as the Northern Hoard's and the Southern Hoard's.  This site mostly pertains to the Northern Hoard's.  I know very little about the Southern Hoard's, but will include here the few differences that I am aware of between the two lines.

Northen Hoard's:
Evolving of name.....
le Hore > Hore > Hoar > Hoard
Ezekia Hore (Hezekiah Hoar, born about 1608 in Devon, England) came from England and settled in Taunton, MA about 1633.  The branches of this family spread West, but mostly stayed in the northern states.
le Hore > Hore - the "le" was dropped sometime between 1100 and 1300 most likely and became just Hore.
Hore > Hoar - the name appears to have been changed upon entry to America about 1633.
Hoar > Hoard - the name appears to have been changed at the pressing of the females of the family about the time of the American Revolution (1776)
The name took on many spelling variations.  Most all of this line appear to have remained in the northern states well up to the 1900's.

Southern Hoard's:
Evolving of name.......
Hord > Hoard
The Hord family originated in England and immigrated to America in the mid 1700's into Virginia.  This line appears to mostly stay in the southern states well into the 1900's.  This line also had slaves due to the southern ways of life at that time, thus there are many that carry the name of Hoard as well.  Because of this, they may or may not be blood related.
If you check out the "family lines" page of my site, you will see that there are some from this line that have provided their lineage to be posted along with email addresses.  You might try contacting them for further information on this Hoard family line.

Update as of October of 2009.....

Therissa Alexander sent an email that anyone may contact her regarding questions about the "southern" Hoard line.  Here's her email address that you can click on to send her an email:  book_Of_gkar@yahoo.com     There are underscores in the email address between the k and O & also between the f and g.

I have also found a book on-line that you can download or purchase.....

The Hord family of Virginia: a supplement to the Genealogy of the Hord family, By Arnold Harris Hord

.....at Google Books regarding the Southern Hoard line.  Click this link to take you to the book on-line...

Good luck!

UPDATE April 20, 2008 - southern Hord line of VA

I have located a website with a tree of the southern Hord/Hoard line.  There are 33 pages currently there to search through.  There is also a contact person.  If you believe that you are of the southern Hoard line, please go to the following page for help.

This line starts with Henry de Hord that was born about 1170 in I assume England.

This tree, created in 2000 by Christina Henry, is not related in any way to the Hoard family that I am researching.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
More info might be found regarding the southern Hord line of VA in the following book posted by Google Books.  Click on the link below to take you to the book titled, "The Hord family of Virginia".....
The ancestry of John Hord starts on page 31 of the above book on-line.  This John Hord was in VA at least by 1737, but possibly earlier.  Read the book for more details.
Again.....I am not researching this line and cannot help those that are.  This line of Hord out of VA is not related in anyway to my Hoard line that came to America into MA.  I have placed these links on my page to try to guide those researching the line to someone that can help them.  I cannot.  Thank you for understanding.
